Aker BP and FourPhase complete the first remote solids management in the North Sea, cutting crews and carbon
30 Sep 2025

The North Sea has just offered a glimpse of the offshore future. Aker BP and FourPhase have completed what they say is the industry’s first fully remote solids management campaign, an achievement that blends digital innovation with a drive to cut emissions.
Over two months, the companies carried out coiled tubing cleanouts on two wells where chalk bridges had formed. Instead of dispatching full offshore crews and bulky equipment, they ran FourPhase’s DualFlow system to separate and monitor solids, with operations directed entirely from Aker BP’s Gnist center onshore.
Only four workers remained offshore, two per shift. That slimmed-down presence reduced helicopter trips and supply runs while limiting exposure to hazardous zones. With this proof of concept complete, Aker BP and FourPhase plan to extend remote management to future campaigns, even running several well interventions at once from land.
Analysts say this marks a broader shift for European operators balancing competitiveness with climate goals. Remote operations mean smaller logistics footprints, faster decision-making, and the ability to harness real-time data to guide maintenance and performance.
Challenges remain. Wider rollout will require resilient digital networks, upgraded legacy infrastructure, and clear safety backstops if remote systems fail. Still, the success in the North Sea suggests that what was once a pilot idea is now a working model and a sign that the path to lower-carbon offshore production may run through fiber-optic cables rather than flight decks.
