SLB and partners take a digital leap to advance UK carbon storage wells in the North Sea
6 Aug 2025

Beneath the North Sea, a digital experiment in decarbonisation is under way. In July 2025 SLB won a contract from the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), a consortium led by bp, Equinor and TotalEnergies, to design and deliver six carbon-storage wells for the East Coast Cluster, a cornerstone of Britain’s industrial net-zero ambitions.
The cluster plans to collect and bury captured carbon dioxide from Teesside and the Humber in deep saline formations offshore. SLB’s role will centre on deploying its Sequestri suite of tools, spanning well planning, drilling, cementing, completions and long-term monitoring. The company claims these digital systems will link each stage of the well’s life, cutting costs and improving reliability compared with conventional methods.
Suppliers are lining up to join. On August 5th Halliburton won a separate NEP award to provide completions and downhole monitoring equipment, underscoring a growing ecosystem for carbon-capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure. Such activity reflects renewed confidence that Britain’s offshore expertise can be repurposed for climate goals.
Yet optimism is tempered by the industry’s history of missed targets and uneven standards. Digitalisation promises efficiency but also adds complexity, requiring coordination between multiple vendors and regulators. Early successes must be replicated to prove that the technology can scale.
If the East Coast Cluster delivers on schedule, it could become the first demonstration of fully digital, offshore carbon-storage wells in British waters and a model for others in the North Sea to follow.
